KDP Hardcover Cover Dimensions & Case Laminate Guide

Updated June 2026 ยท 7 min read ยท By CoverLab Pro

KDP hardcover covers are more complex than paperback covers. The cover boards extend beyond the page block, creating an overhang. There's a hinge channel between the spine and the cover boards. And the cover wraps around the boards, adding even more width. This guide explains every dimension.

Hardcover vs paperback cover โ€” what's different

A paperback cover is a single sheet that wraps directly around the pages. The cover dimensions equal the page dimensions plus bleed. Simple.

A hardcover cover wraps around rigid cover boards that are larger than the pages. The boards overhang the page block by about 0.125 inches on three sides (top, bottom, and fore-edge). Between the spine and each board is a hinge channel โ€” a narrow gap that lets the cover open. These extra elements make the total cover wider and taller than a paperback of the same trim size.

Available hardcover trim sizes

Not all trim sizes support hardcover. KDP offers 8 hardcover sizes:

Hardcovers require a minimum of 75 pages and maximum of 550 pages.

Case laminate explained

KDP hardcovers use case laminate binding โ€” the cover image is printed directly onto the rigid cover boards with a glossy or matte laminate finish. This is the same binding used by traditionally published hardcovers you see in bookstores.

The cover image wraps around the boards. This means your design needs to account for the wrap area โ€” the part of the image that folds over the edges of the boards. KDP specifies exactly how much wrap area to include.

Calculating hardcover cover dimensions

The total cover width for a hardcover is:

Total Width = Wrap + Board Width + Hinge + Spine + Hinge + Board Width + Wrap

Total Height = Wrap + Board Height + Wrap

Each of these measurements is specified by Amazon and varies by trim size. The spine width calculation is the same as paperback (page count ร— paper thickness factor), but the overall cover is significantly wider due to the board overhang, hinge channels, and wrap.

Calculating these manually is error-prone. CoverLab Pro is the only KDP cover tool that calculates full hardcover case laminate dimensions automatically โ€” including board overhang, hinge channel width, and wrap area.

Hardcover spine width

The spine width formula is the same as paperback:

White paper: Page count ร— 0.002252"
Cream paper: Page count ร— 0.0025"

However, the spine is positioned differently on a hardcover โ€” it sits between two hinge channels rather than being directly adjacent to the cover panels. This means spine text alignment is even more critical. Use the spine calculator to get your exact measurement.

Hardcover printing costs

Hardcovers cost significantly more to print than paperbacks. A 200-page black-and-white hardcover costs about $7.90 vs $3.40 for paperback. Most authors price hardcovers $8โ€“15 higher than their paperback edition.

Check the royalty calculator to see exact costs and profit margins for your hardcover at different price points.

Tips for hardcover success

Design for the wrap

Your cover image extends beyond what readers see on the front. The wrap area folds over the board edges. Make sure important design elements are well inside the safe zone โ€” further in than paperback covers.

Price for the cost

With higher printing costs, your minimum list price will be higher. A $12.99 paperback might need to be $22.99 in hardcover to maintain similar per-sale royalties. Readers expect hardcovers to cost more, so this isn't a barrier.

Match your paperback trim

If you're publishing both paperback and hardcover, use the same trim size for both. This lets you reuse the interior formatting and only redesign the cover for the hardcover dimensions.
