KDP Cover Size Doesn't Match? Expected vs Submitted, and How to Fix It

October 2026 · 5 min read · By CoverLab Pro · All guides

You upload your cover and KDP's previewer says the cover size doesn't match, then shows two sets of numbers: an Expected size and a Submitted size. The good news is that those two numbers tell you exactly what went wrong. You just need to know how to read them.

What the two numbers mean

Expected is the size KDP worked out for your book from three things: the trim size you chose, the paper type you chose, and the page count of the interior file you uploaded. Submitted is the size of the cover file you gave it. Both are shown as width × height in inches, for the full wraparound cover: back, spine and front, plus bleed.

KDP doesn't resize your cover to fit. If the numbers disagree by more than a tiny amount, the file is flagged and you need to upload one at the Expected size.

Read the difference: width or height?

Compare the two sizes one number at a time. Which one is off tells you where to look.

Only the width is different: your spine is the wrong width. That means the page count or the paper type used for the cover isn't what KDP has for your book. This is by far the most common case.
The height is different (or both are): the cover was built for a different trim size, the bleed is missing, or it was made for the other binding (a paperback cover uploaded to a hardcover, or the reverse).

The usual cause: the page count changed

KDP counts the pages in the interior file you uploaded, not the pages in your manuscript. Those are often different numbers. A document that is 200 pages in your word processor can become 260 once it's laid out at your trim size with print margins, a larger font, front matter, chapter breaks that start on a new page and any blank pages. KDP may also add pages at the end to make the count work for printing.

The spine is calculated from that page count, so a cover built from the manuscript number comes out too narrow or too wide.

A worked example

Take a 6 × 9 inch paperback on white paper. The cover width is the back and front covers plus bleed (12.25") plus the spine, and each page adds 0.002252" to the spine. The height is always 9.25".

Cover built for 200 pages: 12.25 + (200 × 0.002252) = 12.700 × 9.25 in
Interior uploaded is 260 pages: 12.25 + (260 × 0.002252) = 12.836 × 9.25 in

KDP would report Expected 12.836 × 9.25 and Submitted 12.700 × 9.25. The heights agree and the width is short by 0.136 inches, which is exactly 60 pages of spine. Nothing is wrong with the design. It was just sized for the wrong number of pages.

Work backwards from the Expected width

You can turn KDP's Expected width back into a page count to confirm this. For a 6 × 9 white-paper paperback:

pages = (Expected width − 12.25) ÷ 0.002252

With 12.836 that gives 260. For other trim sizes, replace 12.25 with twice the trim width plus 0.25. If the answer matches the page count KDP shows for your interior, you've found the problem.

Other causes

Wrong paper type

Cream paper is thicker than white: 0.0025" per page instead of 0.002252". On a 260-page book that's a spine of 0.650" instead of 0.586". If you picked cream in KDP but built the cover for white (or the other way round), only the width will be off, and by a small amount. Color paper has its own thickness too. The spine calculator covers each type.

Wrong trim size

If the height is off by a lot, check the trim size. A 6 × 9 book expects a height of 9.25"; a 5.5 × 8.5 book expects 8.75". The trim size on your cover has to be the same one you selected in KDP and used for the interior. See choosing a trim size if you're still deciding.

Missing bleed

If your cover is short by exactly 0.25" in both width and height, the bleed was left off. A print cover always needs 0.125" extra on every outer edge. The cover size guide explains bleed and safe zones.

Paperback cover on a hardcover (or the reverse)

A hardcover cover is much larger than a paperback one for the same book, because it wraps around the boards and has a thicker spine. If both numbers are off by more than an inch, check you've uploaded the file for the right binding. Hardcover sizing is covered in the hardcover cover guide.

How to fix it

1. Get the real page count. Upload your interior to KDP first and use the page count it shows for that file, not your manuscript's.
2. Check the other two settings. Confirm the trim size and paper type in your KDP title setup, and use the same ones for the cover.
3. Rebuild the cover at that size. Enter the page count, paper type and trim size in the spine calculator or in your cover tool. The size it gives should equal KDP's Expected size.
4. Re-center the spine and check the edges. When the spine width changes, the front and back panels move. Make sure the spine text is centered on the new spine and nothing important has drifted toward the trim line.
5. Export a new PDF and upload it. The message should clear in the previewer.

If the page count changes again later, even by a few pages after an edit, the cover needs to be resized again. It's worth leaving the cover until the interior is final.

Before you upload

Quick check:
✅ Interior uploaded to KDP, and you've noted the page count KDP shows
✅ Cover uses that page count, not the manuscript's
✅ Paper type matches (white, cream or color)
✅ Trim size matches the interior
✅ Bleed included: 0.125" on every outer edge
✅ Right binding: paperback and hardcover need separate cover files
✅ Exported as a single PDF

Get the size right first time

In CoverLab Pro you enter your page count, paper and trim size, and the cover is sized for you. Change the page count later and the spine updates with it. A pre-export checklist shows the exact size you're about to upload.
